Question: What Do You Need To Be An Uber Driver?
Answer: In order to become an uberX driver, you must be have your own personal 4-door vehicle to pick up riders. If you are interested in driving uberXL, your vehicle must be able to seat at least 6 people.
You will need to provide Uber with a valid driver’s license, registration and personal insurance. You must be at least 21 years old and pass a mandatory background check. The background check goes back at least 7 years and also check multiple states.
Be mindful that some cities might require you to also go through a vehicle inspection. And we are unable to list the vehicle year requirement because it does vary by city to city. You shouldn’t worry about the year requirement unless your vehicle is 10 years old or older. If it is, you might want to check with Uber customer support before starting the application process.
You also will need either an iPhone or Android device with preferably unlimited data as Uber estimate that you will use about 1.5 GB for every 300 trips. If you do not have your own phone, you can always rent an iPhone from Uber for $15 a week. There is also a $200 deposit requirement that is fully refundable when you return their device. You do not have to pay this fee upfront, Uber will deduct a total of four $50 weekly payments from your earnings. You can always rent a phone until you are able to get your own with a good data service. But, this is a great way to start for those who do not have any other choice.
Last thought: Since you are not employed by Uber, but an independent contractor, Uber will provide you with a W9 and you will report your income to the IRS. Uber pays their drivers weekly.

– Personal 4-door vehicle (please check with Uber for vehicle year requirement)
