Rider Question: How to use Uber with a prepaid card? In this article we will help you understand how prepaid card work on the Uber system.

How to use Uber with a prepaid cardAnswer: This is a very good question and we wish we had a good answer for you, but unfortunately MOST prepaid credit cards are NOT accepted on the Uber system.

Some riders have confirmed that they have had success with using a Green Dot prepaid card. This could be very well true, especially since Uber has partnered with GoBank.com to provide their drivers with daily payouts.

GoBank is a brand of Green Dot Bank. Makes sense to us…

Issues With Card

Anyway, if you have signed up for Uber already and you are having issues with your credit card this is probably why. Your credit card is not compatible with the Uber billing system.

Don’t even waste your time contacting Uber support about it because this is not something they can override. Uber has this policy and prevention in place as a safety precaution.

Which Prepaid is OK

One thing we know is that not all prepaid cards are bad, Uber does accept some of them.

But, which ones?

Well.

They don’t have a specific detailed list that they provide, but the prepaid cards they mostly accept are the ones who has your identity attached to it. Meaning, you had to provide a real name, social security number, etc., just to obtain it. Unfortunately, it’s most of those toss-able digits prepaid cards that anyone can get their hands on that the Uber system will kick out.

Workarounds…

Sorry, there are no real workarounds here.

Yes, you could use a friend or family member’s credit card if they give you permission to do so.

However, the only problem we foresee with this is if Uber ever disable your app and does an account verification check requesting your ID and credit card.

At that point, you will not be able to pass this security check because your name doesn’t match the name on the credit card. If that does happen, you can be honest and tell Uber that you are using a friend’s card.

This want make much difference in terms of getting your account reactivated, but Uber will give you a chance to attached your own card to the account so you can use the app again.

Even if you attached the prepaid card to a Paypal account (or something similar), the Uber system is intelligent enough to recognize this and will still reject your payment method.

So the best thing you can do in this case is go and apply for a real prepaid card through a bank like Wells Fargo, Capital One, Bank of America, etc.

Prepaid cards like this doesn’t require a credit check. But, if you would like to apply for a real credit card and you have limited or bad credit, then Capital One is one of the best cards to obtain to rebuild your credit.
